13 Spring Break Activities For The Family To Enjoy Together
Happy March!
I don't know about you, but inevitably every year during Jordan's Spring Break, I realize that I've planned nothing fun to keep him busy and burn off his energy. 2018 will be different, though! Because my life's motto these days is "If you stay ready, you don't have to get ready", I'm being proactive and getting a plan together 3 weeks early. Am I jumping the gun? A little, yeah. But if I don't do it now, I'll wash a load of clothes, look up, and it'll be Spring Break and I'll have prepared nothing for the 3rd year in a row.
Below I've compiled a list of 13 activity ideas for all of us to consult whenever we're asked, "What are we gonna do today?". Note: most of these ideas are universal to every region and all are free or cheap.
Blow Bubbles
Who doesn't love bubbles?! Bubble blowing can be done inside or out. If it's hot outside, take it to the next level and make giant bubbles with a giant bubble wand!
Read Outdoors
Why not change it up and read outside somewhere? Even if it's just outside on the patio, the change of scenery makes the whole experience totally new.
Have a Picnic
There's something so classic about having a picnic! I'm planning to take Jordan to have a picnic at the Botanical Gardens.
Plant Flowers
The dollar spot at Target has everything you'd need (gloves, seeds, watering cans, etc.) to start a garden.
Visit Children's Museums and Theaters
A fun day at the museum learning about (or just looking at) art while being hands on and/or at the theater seeing a play sounds like a great way to spend an hour or 2.
Spring Crafts
This is especially if you're still experiencing non-Spring weather that keeps you indoors. When the powers of scissors, glue, construction paper, washi tape and Pinterest combine, magic happens.
Fly a Kite
One of my favorite memories from childhood is going to the park with my mom and trying (unsuccessfully) to get a kite to fly. That's an experience I'm definitely going to pass on.
Library
Weekly activities are a staple at most, if not all, libraries across the country. Our local library's children's area has activities ranging from story time to gymnastics. Jordan misses most activities because he's at school, so this is a chance to participate in a different class and break up the scheduled monotony.
Lunch or Ice Cream at a Restaurant
Bonus points if your restaurant of choice has a play area in the back, a la Chik Fil A and Mickey D's. Having lunch or a special treat at a restaurant is always fun for kids, especially if there's a play area to run around in while mom and dad enjoy the AC!
Free or Cheap Classes @ A Craft Store
Check your local stores for their offerings. Stores like Michael's and Joann's Fabrics offer all kinds of classes for kids to learn how to create something from scratch.
Window Shop (a.k.a. walk around) the Mall
One of my favorite past times in college was going to the mall and window shopping. It was a great way to escape the heat and get off campus for a couple hours. The same goes for now. It's a different environment for the kids. There's all kinds of food options, and if your kids have growth spurts every 20 minutes like mine, it's a great chance to figure out their sizes (and go get clothes while they're at school).
Go To The Park
DUH.
Go To The Playground
DOUBLE DUH.
Feed Ducks
This would have to be confirmed with your local parks, but a few parks in my city have ducks and geese that you can feed! Can't you just see your little one trying to throw bread crumbs in the water? How cute will that be?!
I hope you found some ideas for your kid's week off. As hectic and out of the norm as it may be, it's a great chance to reconnect with them, do something a little different, and have fun! Comment below if you're going to try any of these ideas!
Talk to you soon.
