What 90's Movies Taught Me About Life

Between 1990 and 1999, some of the most iconic children's movies of all time were created, making an impact on the lives of children everywhere. I can't tell you how many times I've watched Richie Rich (I lost count after 11) or how heartbroken I was when (spoiler alert?) Mufasa died. While they are a source of nostalgia, they also taught me lessons that have stuck with me throughout life. Here are some of my favorite childhood movies, and the lessons they taught me.

Mulan

You can do anything you want to do. The only thing you have to do is keep going. Keep trying. The only thing that can stop you is (duh!) YOU. Also, girls are badass.

The Lion King

Leadership is not all about the extravagant appearance. It's a lot of hard work, sacrifice, and commitment. But, no matter how daunting, have courage, take your spot, and do your best. And calling the bugs "slimy yet satisfying" ruined any chance of me ever eating an oyster.

Richie Rich

Most stereotypes aren't true. Basing someone's character off of what they look like almost certainly guarantees you'll be wrong. And money won't buy happiness...though a McDonalds down the hall and a rollercoaster in the backyard would make 11 year old Breana pretty happy!

Little Giants

Being feminine and tough are not mutually exclusive, no matter what anyone tries to tell you. And I still want to learn The Annexation of Puerto Rico!

A Goofy Movie

Parents really don't get it sometimes, but they try as hard as they can to make us happy, so cut them some slack. Am I the only one who wanted to go to a Powerline concert?

The Nightmare Before Christmas

It's ok to be wrong. It's ok to stumble when working towards something you've never done before. Who would've thought a Halloween/Christmas movie would work?!
